Quiz 15  AU11 Due at START of class Monday November 28th. Thanks for your cooperation.

SECTION 5.4

1. Factor.    x2 - 169.

2. Factor.    x2  - 144.

3. Factor.    x2   -  24x  +  144.

4. Factor.    x2  +  24x  +  144.

SECTION 5.5

5.  Factor COMPLETELY.    x3  -  24x2  +  144x. Hint. First factor out x. Then continue factoring until COMPLETE.

6.  Factor COMPLETELY.    x3  -  6x2  +  9x. Hint. See previous problem.

7.  Factor by grouping.    x3  +  3x2  +  4x  + 12.  HINT. See class notes. Worked this out on whiteboard last week. Also see #38, #44 along with example 7 in section 5.1.

SECTION 5.6

For the following solve using the principle of zero products A·B = 0 means A = 0 or B = 0.

8. SOLVE USING THE PRINCIPLE OF ZERO PRODUCTS:
(x + 1)(x + 5) = 0

9. SOLVE USING THE PRINCIPLE OF ZERO PRODUCTS:
(x - 1)(x - 5) = 0. Note differences and similarities with the previous problem.

10.  FIRST FACTOR THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE EQUATION.  THEN SOLVE USING THE PRINCIPLE OF ZERO PRODUCTS:
x2  +  6x  +  5 = 0. Note differences and similarities with the two previous problems.

11.  FIRST FACTOR THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE EQUATION.  THEN SOLVE USING THE PRINCIPLE OF ZERO PRODUCTS:
x2  -   5x  +  4 = 0.

12.  FIRST FACTOR THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE EQUATION.  THEN SOLVE USING THE PRINCIPLE OF ZERO PRODUCTS:
x2
+  8x  = 0. Hints:  There are two solutions and one of them is x = 0. Find the other solution for x.  See example 5.

13.    EXTRA CREDIT:   SECTION 5.3 PROBLEM

FACTOR:
7x2  +  15x + 2.

HINT ~ SEE PAGE 319 AND DISCUSSION OF THE GROUPING METHOD. SEE THE 6 STEPS GIVEN AND READ EXAMPLES 6  AND 7  FOR  PRACTICE.

14.    EXTRA CREDIT:   SECTION 5.3 PROBLEM

FACTOR:
9x2  +  18x  +  5 .

HINT ~  SEE PAGE 319 AND DISCUSSION OF THE GROUPING METHOD. SEE THE 6 STEPS GIVEN AND READ EXAMPLES 6  AND 7  FOR  PRACTICE.
